Bookshelf Scavenger Hunt: A bookshelf scavenger hunt is the perfect indoor activity for a rainy day! It is also a great way to renew your child’s love for books!
Kids will just love this bookshelf scavenger hunt! They love scavenger hunts. Well, adults do too, I guess! They are just fun for anyone! It is exciting to hunt for things, find them and check them off of your list. It is also a great way to keep kids entertained on an otherwise boring day.
Many people will be able to do this at home but if you need to go to a library that is fine too. It would be fun and totally different to do a hunt in both places!
After the hunt choose at least one book to read! Don’t choose your favorite for this. You might find a new favorite! Of course, you may also read your favorite! 😊

Two Levels of Hunts:
I have made two levels of my bookshelf scavenger hunt so all kids are able to play. It is no fun to not be able to play!
Readers:
Older kids who can read have their version with 20 things to find. Preferably they will not use the same book for any two on the list but if you need or want to that is okay. It will depend on how many books you have available and what level your child is enjoying the hunt. It would be good to decide on that before the search begins.

Pre-Readers:
Younger kids have a version with 12 pictures (with their words) to find in books. Explain that the picture on the paper and the picture in the book won’t look exactly the same (it isn’t like the Highlights search). Just find any old bear, house, dog, etc. Just have fun with it.
For very young children, you will want to find books ahead of time that you know have those pictures in them and sit them down with them.
For older ones doing the picture search, let them find the books off of the shelf. There are so many levels that are possible with this. You could also have them cut the picture squares out and then find them in the books.
