It is fun to make festive and pretty treats for the holidays and these Patriotic Truffles will not disappoint! They are sweet and chocolatey with a surprise center!
These truffles require only 1 minute of time in the microwave to melt the baking chips and the rest is some rolling, assembling and sprinkling! If you can do that, you can make these!
Oh wait. I left out the hardest part. They need to chill for a couple of hours before you roll them into balls. That waiting is definitely the hardest part. Hurry up! When you know how good they are going to be, you will not want to wait! 😊
These are a great recipe to make with the kids. They can all help! Even the youngest can sprinkle on the sprinkles!

Key Ingredients
(Full printable ingredients and instructions are just below.)
Oreo cookies—generic can be used but Oreos really are best. The patriotic fireworks ones that come out for July 4th will lose their sparkles when mixed with the cream cheese so don’t bother with those; ask me how I know 😊 You need 2 ½ cups of crushed cookies total
Cream cheese, softened—either full fat or 1/3 fat
White baking chips
Vegetable shortening
Peanut M&Ms—these are the surprise in the middle but won’t be a nice surprise for someone with a peanut allergy. Be sure you know your audience, so to speak and substitute with plain M&Ms if you aren’t sure. One of each red, white and blue would be a great alternate.
Patriotic sprinkles and/or sugar
How to Make Patriotic Truffles
Crush cookies as finely as possible. Use a food processor if possible.
Combine cream cheese and crushed cookies.
Cover and refrigerate for about two hours or until firm.
Remove a truffle worth of cookie and cream cheese mixture and roll into a ball between the palms of your hands. You want the truffle to be about 1 inch in size.
Take 1 peanut M&M and push it into the truffle.
Push the truffle around the M&M and roll it again.
Place the truffle onto a parchment lined baking sheet (affiliate link).
Continue until all truffles are rolled.
Melt shortening and baking chips together in a microwave safe bowl for one minute.
Stir.
The mixture should be smooth and melted after 1 minute. If not, microwave another 10 seconds and stir again. Add 10 seconds at a time until melted but watch carefully. It shouldn’t need much more than a minute and in most cases 1 minute will be enough.
Dip truffles in melted chips one at a time and move around gently with two forks until coated.
Use forks to drip chocolate onto truffles.
Remove with forks. (Don’t pierce.)
Return each one to parchment paper (affiliate link) to harden.
Add sprinkles as soon as you put them on the parchment paper (affiliate link) because they will harden quickly.
