A visit from Mr. Downy Woodpecker: The Story of my Visit from Mr. Woodpecker

Sometimes you get an unexpected treat.  It was 8am and I heard a “thump!” on the kitchen window.  I looked out on the front porch and saw Mr. Downy Woodpecker crumpled on the ground. I didn’t want to leave him on the cold stone where a cat or other predator could get him so went outside.

When I picked him up, he did not look good; eyes mostly closed, panting and mouth open.  He did not even try to stand in my hand.

After a while, he breathed normally and just rested in my hand. I totally enjoyed stroking his head and back and talking to him.

A little later, he readjusted himself to stand in my hand and settled his feathers. I told him over and over how beautiful he was.

I held him loosely so he could fly off whenever he was ready.

He sat for a while and looked around. I told him how I enjoyed seeing him at my feeders. His eyes cleared and he sat straighter. He seemed to enjoy the visit too.

After about 40 minutes, he flew high into a tree.  A happy ending.

Another home story you may enjoy is Fawn in the Flowerbed. We had a brand new baby fawn hiding in the flowers and got to watch his mommy come back for him. So sweet! 🙂
